How automatic lead advance works
After the initial click to start writing, the sliding sleeve retracts as the lead is used. Lifting the pencil during normal writing allows the mechanism to feed more lead. It is designed to reduce repeated clicking, rather than continuously pushing lead forward while the tip remains pressed against the paper.
The sleeve supports the lead close to the page. Write with minimal exposed lead as intended by the Orenz system, rather than extending a long unsupported section. Lead protection reduces a source of breakage; it does not make the lead unbreakable.
Dual Grip and balance
The Dual Grip combines a faceted metal section with rubber elements, and the pencil uses a low-center-of-gravity design. Consider it if you prefer a defined, firmer grip. Writers who want a soft gel grip should compare the Alpha Gel Switch before deciding.
Will the sleeve touch the paper?
The sliding sleeve can contact the page because the pencil is designed to write with very little exposed lead. Whether you notice that contact depends on your writing angle, pressure and paper. If you strongly dislike sleeve contact, a conventional click-advance design may be a better fit.
