Tombow Ki Monogatari: a light wooden pencil
Its slim, hexagonal wooden barrel is the straightforward choice for someone who likes a traditional pencil shape. The refillable 0.5mm mechanism avoids sharpening, and the listed weight is about 6g. Choose it for low weight and simplicity; it does not provide a cushioned grip, automatic lead feeding or Kuru Toga rotation.

Uni Alpha Gel Switch: a cushioned grip and two modes
The Alpha Gel grip provides a soft contact surface. Switch between Kuru Toga Mode, which rotates the lead, and Hold Mode, which keeps it fixed. This is useful when you want to compare rotating and conventional writing behavior in one pencil. Its thicker, softer grip will not suit everyone who prefers a slim, firm barrel.

Pilot THE Dr. GRIP: a wide grip and shake advance
Choose this model when a wide, cushioned grip is your priority. Lead advances by a gentle shake or the top button, and the shake mechanism can be locked for storage. It offers a different grip shape from the slim Tombow or metal Kuru Toga. Comfort depends on your hand and grip; the design alone cannot guarantee comfortable long sessions.

Pentel Orenz AT: automatic lead feeding
The Orenz AT combines automatic lead feeding with a sleeve that supports the lead. It is the model to compare when you want fewer interruptions to click out more lead. Follow its operating instructions rather than extending a long exposed point. The sleeve-based writing feel differs from a conventional fixed drafting tip.

Pilot S20: wood with a drafting-style tip
The S20 pairs a wooden barrel with conventional click advance and an extended tip that keeps the writing area visible. Its listed 18g weight is substantially greater than the roughly 6g Tombow. Choose between the two wooden models by barrel shape, weight and budget. Protect the extended tip in a case when carrying it.

Uni Kuru Toga Metal: rotating lead in a metal body
The Kuru Toga mechanism rotates lead as you write, while this model adds a metal body, Mild Edge Grip and nib damper. Consider it if a metal grip and more consistent lead wear matter to you. Rotation depends on writing motion; it is a different function from the Orenz AT's automatic lead feeding.

Automatic feeding and rotating lead solve different problems
The Orenz AT feeds lead to reduce the need for repeated clicking. Kuru Toga rotates the lead to distribute wear around the point. Neither feature replaces choosing the right grip or a suitable lead grade. If you are deciding between these two mechanisms, compare their operation before paying for a feature you may not use.
Refills, paper and carrying
All six models listed here use 0.5mm lead. Check the exact model instructions for loading and clearing a jam, and do not force an incompatible lead size into the mechanism. Start by comparing pencils on the same paper with the same lead grade. That keeps paper and lead differences from obscuring the effect of the grip or mechanism.
Retract exposed lead before putting a pencil away, and protect fixed metal tips from impacts. If an exam or class requires a particular writing tool, follow that requirement before choosing an upgrade.
