Jetstream Karimoku vs Pure Malt 4&1: 0.5 or 0.7mm?

Sep 24
2 min read

Choose the Jetstream x Karimoku 4&1 if you want the finer 0.5mm ballpoint tips and a grip made using Karimoku furniture offcuts. Choose the Pure Malt Jetstream Inside 4&1 if you prefer 0.7mm ballpoint tips and whisky-barrel oak. Both combine four ink colors with a separate 0.5mm mechanical pencil.

Marukaku sells both pens. This is a comparison of the listed models and actual product photographs, not a measured ink, drying-time or grip-comfort test.

What is the same in both 4&1 pens?

Each pen combines black, red, blue and green Jetstream ballpoint ink with a 0.5mm pencil. You can switch between erasable lead and four ink colors without carrying five tools. The four ballpoints and the pencil are different mechanisms; the 0.5mm pencil size stays the same in both models.

Both are multipens, so someone who writes almost entirely in black may prefer a simpler single-color pen. The wood is part of the grip or body design, while the Jetstream ballpoints supply the ink.

0.5mm versus 0.7mm ballpoint tips

Marukaku's Karimoku listing has four 0.5mm ballpoint tips. Pure Malt's four ballpoints are 0.7mm. If you write in narrow planner boxes or annotate small diagrams, start with Karimoku's finer nominal size. If you favor a broader ballpoint tip for headings and everyday notes, start with Pure Malt.

These numbers describe the ballpoint diameter, not a guaranteed width of every mark on every sheet of paper. Ink flow, pressure and paper also matter. We have not photographed a side-by-side writing sample, so this article does not claim one is darker, faster drying or less prone to smearing.

What do the photographs show about the wood?

Uni Jetstream x Karimoku 4&1 blue multipen showing the natural wood grip

The Karimoku collaboration uses offcuts from furniture production for its wooden grip. The photographed pen shows the wood section against a blue body; natural grain and color vary by piece.

Uni Pure Malt Jetstream Inside 4&1 black multipen with reclaimed oak wood grip

Pure Malt uses reclaimed oak from whisky barrels. The black body and oak accent give it a different look. A photo helps you compare the finishes, but it cannot tell you which wood shape will feel better in your own hand.

Refills and the buying decision

Both pens are refillable. Check your exact model and tip size before buying replacement ink: the Karimoku listing starts with 0.5mm ballpoints, while the Pure Malt listing starts with 0.7mm. Uni's Jetstream refill guide lists compatible SXR-80 refills by size and model. Replacement lead for either built-in pencil is 0.5mm.

If you regularly switch among colors and pencil, select the tip size and wood finish you want to use every day. If you mostly write in black, consider the simpler Pure Malt Jetstream Single instead of paying for four color selectors you will rarely touch. Current color and price options are on the product pages.
